Victorian Government Trade and Investment (VGTI)
Rebecca Hall, Commissioner to Southeast Asia
Can you tell us about VGTI?
The Victorian Government Trade and Investment (VGTI) network is comprised of 23 offices around the world, including 4 in Southeast Asia. Our Indonesia team is made up of specialists who lead our trade, investment, government and education portfolios, working to promote Victoria and Victorian products and services in market. We work closely with Global Victoria, Invest Victoria and Study Melbourne to achieve these goals.
What is your role about?
In Southeast Asia, VGTI offices are located in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City. The main activities are to represent Victoria’s interests in Southeast Asia, provide information and assistance with investment attraction export development, innovation capability, tourism, education, business and skilled migration and bilateral relations, and facilitate the ongoing development of cultural and business linkages and Government-to-Government exchanges to improve mutual understanding and adoption of international best practice.
What is the current focus of VGTI?
We are focused on the role that Victoria and Victorian businesses can play in COVID/post COVID world. During COVID we have doubled down on our support for Victorian exporters, engagement with students (wherever they may be learning) and in supporting investors to take advantage of the Victorian ecosystem for expansion. Victoria is currently working to support Victorian exporters to succeed in the region in several ways, including through e-Commerce Accelerator Program, Virtual Trade Missions, EdTech, Global Gateway Grants, creating in-market connections with international buyers and business leaders, providing market intelligence and industry insights, and pursuing strategic partnerships.
Why are you an IABC Member?
As an IABC member we gain access to information and connections through the Chamber’s networks. As a government agency we respect the role that IABC plays as a voice for the Australian business community in Indonesia. We appreciate the role that IABC plays to keep us informed of changing government policies which affect business’ operations. We also value being able to share our updates on Victorian business and global engagement plans with the IABC members.
With COVID creating such disruption, how are you managing it and what are you looking forward to in the future?
COVID has impacted lives and livelihoods, and although we are physically separated, we are more connected than ever. I am looking forward to taking what we have learnt and the deeper connections we have made during these challenging times and turn this into opportunity. For our team at the Victorian Government Trade and Investment office Jakarta that means assisting more Victorian exporters engage in business solutions and partnerships in Indonesia, leveraging the foundation of IA-CEPA, attracting more investment and new talent to Victoria, and supporting new models of education engagement in the region
Thank you Rebecca.
